Central Catholic High School

Kevin Helmle, Ph.D.

Distinguished Faculty Award

Dr. Kevin Helmle started his career at CMCP in 2014 teaching Chemistry. He became the Science Department Chair in August 2019 and made the switch to teaching Biology. He enjoys facilitating labs where students apply techniques they have learned in the classroom to solve a problem or answer a question. The students are the reason he keeps coming back each year! He appreciates how much school spirit they have and admires how proud they are to attend CMCP.

Dr. Helmle is going on his fifth year of coaching the C-M Lions Cross Country and Tennis teams. Dr. Helmle is the current moderator for the Science National Honor Society. In the 2021-2022 school year, he served as a co-chair for the accreditation committee. He was also named the 2017-2018 Instructional Educator of the Year for CMCP. Receiving this award meant alot to him since it was voted on by students and their parents.

In the summer of 2019, Dr. Helmle spent a week at a seminar learning about new teaching methods that help enhance the dialogue between science and faith in Catholic education at a Science & Religion Seminar hosted by The University of Notre Dame. A goal of his is to become more involved in The Science & Religion Initiative of the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame.

Before his tenure at CMCP, Dr. Helmle was involved in coral reef and climate research. His Ph.D. is in Oceanography/Marine Biology. CMCP holds a special place in his heart because he is able to integrate science and faith in his own daily life and in the lives of the students. In his free time he loves to get outside and spend time with his family.
